Sant Llorenç Church

The church of Sant Llorenç de Balàfia was included in the plan drawn up by the first bishop of Ibiza, Manuel Abad y Lasierra, a convinced man of the Enlightenment, to create rural parishes in order to try to put an end to the population dispersion (the total population in 1784 was calculated at around 15,000 people). This was the origin of the Sant Rafel, Santa Agnès, Sant Mateu, Santa Gertrudis, Sant Carles, Sant Agustí and Sant Llorenç churches. All of these churches’ style can be classified as traditional architecture, although at times we can find reminiscences of other historical styles from the period when they were built. The Sant Llorenç church began to be built in 1785, and it was finished in the 19th century. On his trip to Ibiza in 1867, the Archduke Louis Salvador of Austria defined it as “one of the most well-proportioned and elegant churches on Ibiza”.
