Erwin Broner

Painter and architect Erwin Broner (Munich 1898- Kreuth, 1971) was a prominent figure in Ibiza's art scene. Erwin Broner first came to the island in 1934, in flight from the Nazis because of his Jewish roots. He was born into the heart of a well-off family surrounded by an encouraging ambience for artistic inspirations. Together with other artists, Broner founded the Ibiza59 group, with which he mounted exhibitions and other cultural activities until its dissolution in 1964. In his facet as an architect, he was adept at combining traditional Ibizan architecture with modern elements. Among the different constructions he erected on the island was his own home, which he built between 1959 and 1960 in what was the fishermen's quarter of Sa Penya in the city of Ibiza, as well as the expansion of another, pre-existing house, which was inhabited by his widow, Gisela Broner, until her death in 2005, when it was donated to the Ibiza Municipal Council. After painstaking rehabilitation to recover its original state, including the furniture, the building was inaugurated as a multi-functional museum space in February 2010. Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in the monument category, it is part of the Broner Foundation, which works to disseminate the artist's work and other cultural activities of interest. The building has two storeys and a garden. On the first floor is a living space with an enormous window looking out to the sea and on the ground floor is a work space. A small, yet spectacular bridge was erected over the cliff on which the house is situated so that both storeys would have independent entrances.
